Wow, good timing, LJ. I was just thinking I'd extend my paid account 2 months to match the expiry with the extra userpics. Then I got thinking maybe I'd cut them a break and keep up with the paid account since there hadn't been much wank lately.

Now, it turns out they've quietly eliminated the option of creating a new basic account. (Thanks to the super-awesome [livejournal.com profile] troubleinchina for the heads up.)

So right, yeah. No more Ginny money for you, LJ. Which is really a shame, because I have more of it to spend now.

And instead you can spend it on yarn! Soft, colorful, fun, and free of stupid ads. :)

I just dropped back down from a paid account to a basic account and I've got to be honest, it's not a big difference for me. I miss my extra icons, but at the end of the day they weren't worth the cash. That was really the only paid account perk I was using anyway.

Enjoy your not-for-LJ-anymore money!

The extra icons were all I was using, too. On the other hand, I did feel I ought to support the service that I was using so much. However, I no longer feel strongly compelled (or at all) to support a company that treats its clients this way.

Well, that's stupid. But, my paid account is expiring in about a week, but this doesnt affect me right? I already decided I wasn't going to renew it because i barely pay attention to my extra icons now anyway.

Yeah, you'll just drop to a regular basic. (Like I will at the end of the month.)

I have seen, in at least one place, speculation that even existing basic accounts will be changed to with-ads accounts. That will make me cranky. However, I have adblock running, and it should catch the ads.

Ugh - if they do switch basic accounts to "plus" accounts I suppose I will have to install adblock. And probably start using Firefox instead of Safari :(

I use FF instead of Safari for most of my browsing because of noscript. However, I recently discovered that there are quite a few plug-ins for Safari, some of which block ads. The most recommended one is not free, though. Still, I'd rather give $10 to a developer who's made something to block "all" ads essentially permanently than give $20 to a company that says "pay up bitchez, or enjoy the ads".

(I read a very valid point: the ads take time to download, increasingly include animation, and can crash browsers. Idiots.)

You forgot one more thing in-line ads can do: redirect. I've been seeing it happen more frequently and it infuriates me.

??!!??

Why, I can't imagine why you wouldn't want to be hijacked from where you wanted to go to somewhere that you can buy crap*stuff!*.

*grumble*
