ginny_t: for best results, store Ginny in a warm sunny place (Canadian Borg (montrealais))

So, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] troubleinchina (who might perhaps be feeding my Feminist - la!), it's Women's History Month here in Canada. I feel I ought to do something. But I am a lazy wench. So, I steal a link from her: the new Dove ad. (Yes, you're still in Ginny's journal and yes, that is indeed a youtube link. Don't worry: I won't make a trend of hypocrisy1. Except when it suits my mood.)

1 I detest youtube with a mad passion because the page opens and the video plays automatically. DO NOT WANT! *ahem*

I approve most heartily of Dove's advertising campaigns. The ad they had a few years ago, featuring realistically proportioned women in lingerie, was both refreshing and fun to look at. Curves beat angles every day in my book. ^_^

One of my co-workers was in those ads. ^^

you know that if you embed the video on your page, though, it doesn't load or start until you hit the > right? so if you do want to show something like that, and don't want autostart, embedding should be your choice.

I know that, and it's not so much my links as links that are recommended to me. It's up there with sites that play music on the irritation scale.

And I hate it embedded because it slows down my loading time. ;)

The best of both worlds seems to be embedding video behind an lj-cut that warns that it hides an embedded video (which is what I tend to do these days).

It seems a little disingenuous to put youtube pages playing videos automatically on part with sites that play music. The whole point of going to a youtube page is to watch the video. Sites that play music are usually pages that you're going to for something else and where the music is just an annoying side element.

It's true that you navigate to a youtube link for the purpose of the video that begins playing, but since I have a slow connection (for finances reasons), I know I have to load it first, so ideally, I'd open the tab, let it load, and then choose when it started playing. Alas, not an option.

I usually double-click the play button in the bottom left, to quickly put it in play mode then pause mode. It's two extra clicks, but accomplishes what you want. But yeah, I agree that it'd be nice if you could set that as a preference it would remember.

(Sorry, hope I don't sound snippy there - stupid nuanceless text!)

wow, that commercial really makes an impact. Thanks for the link. Also, that thing about youtube that you hate? I love that it does that. :)

Have I mentioned I absolutely adore your Borg icon?

I think you have, but it's certainly awesome enough to get repeated love. ^_~

i don't detest youtube, but i also don't like that autoplay behaviour. it would be easy enough for them to let you set a preference, stored in a cookie.

back on topic: that is an incredibly effective commercial.

I like that ad. I'm not sure what to make of the part that shows the person looking at their scale and losing and gaining weight. I assume that that's an illustration of yo-yo dieting, but it was more ambiguous than I would have liked. Nonetheless, I think it was a good ad.
