Pocky has milk powder in it. All flavours. I think it's the stick.

Poor Stuart, I had a mini-breakdown in the store last night, grabbing boxes randomly and wailing.

*WAIL!*

It's pretty yummy. I recommend trying it, at least.

My favourite is Man Pocky, because it's darker chocolate. ^_^ Alas, it is my favourite no more …

O_O

I was reminded today that there're pills that some people can take before ingesting lactose--is there any chance those'd work for you?

There are pills, yes. I could try them, but I prefer to cut lactose out, for safety's sake.

I can survive without pocky. As long as I can have chocolate (okay, all the Perfect Foods™), I'm good.

I can only have one or two servings of milk a day, or else my whole digestive tract goes on strike. It's not pretty. I figured I should share a few things with you that I've picked up along the way:

Pocky, like most things with 'milk powder' are only no-no's if you're really allergic. And even then, there's only a minimal amount of the lactose in it anyway, so unless you devour 20 boxes of it at one sitting, it would be ok. (I know quite a few folks who are allergic to milk and can enjoy chocolate and pocky and even milk, in certain forms)

Cheese: The older, the better. Those happy cheese bacteria have worked their magic, and there's less lactose to run amock unchecked in the digestive tract. Goat cheeses are usually ok, in moderation. They have less lactose in it than the bovine variety, in general. Goats milk

If you still want to cut out all the milk, then do try some kind of suppliment. I find the calcium chocolate chews to be tasty and easy to remember to take daily.

Of course, your troubles might not even be milk. Keep notes on how you feel after a few weeks of cutting out the milk. Something like a food diary. It's entirely possible it's something else in your diet causing trouble.

...and I've babbled enough. *runs*

Don't run away before I can thank you for your help! (I suspected some/a lot of what you said, but it's good to have from someone who knows personally.)

Well, I'm fairly certain the Pocky is chocolate-on-a-pretzel-stick... I guess you might be right, if the pretzel is made with milk products.

But you could make your own. Yes, more work, but is it worth it, I wonder...? :)

My sis-in-law is about as severly lactose intolerant as it is possible to get, and I asked her about Pocky, because I just couldn't believe it. She said the amount of milk in Pocky is negligible and that she's never had any problem with it. She doesn't even have to take lactaid pills. Lots of things have milk powder in them; very few will have enough to cause problems, unless you are actually allergic to milk, which is a different thing entirely from lactose intolerance.

She also recommends yogurt. Since the bacteria in yogurt break down the lactose, it shouldn't cause any problems, and it's a good source of calcium and other nutrients.

I agree with the person above who said you should keep a food diary so that you can pinpoint exactly what is causing your problems. It's not a good idea to cut things from your diet that you don't actually need to cut, because that will just make it harder for you to get the nutrients that you need to stay healthy. Also, why not try lactaid pills? My SIL says they work great for her, for almost all dairy products except real milk and ice cream, which she has to limit.
