It's entirely possible to have a book/movie/story with single characters of mutually preferred genders (wow, that was hard to express without being heteronormative!) each other's preferred gender who spend time together and talk and work toward the same end and don't fall in love. I'm lookin' at you, Amélie (and many other stories). Revolutionary, I know.
