Still a little cranky, but getting better.

Got home yesterday and flopped. Folding Ysa's bed back into Ginny's couch was a drag. The kitties kept me company, though.

And the five (5) FIVE Wade Rowland books coming into the library for me helped. Some of them look meh. But Galileo's Mistake, Spirit of the Web, and Greed, Inc. Oh yeah! (I'm going to have to revise my self-image of "not a non-fiction reader".)

Yesterday's Sun headline, "Ice Tragedy", was stupid and vexing. 3 morons ride motorcycles on to Lake Simcoe in the mild winter we've been having, and 2 are killed. Even if you don't insist on the classical definition of tragedy as "hero of high standing brough low by fatal flaw", that still wasn't a tragedy. It was Darwinism.

Yep. The Toronto Sun. Hero-ising stupidity for longer than I care to think about.

Yeah, on my very first trip to Toronto, I bought my first and last Sun. The decision still haunts me even to this day.

The real tragedy here is that you read the Toronto Sun.

*wail* No, it was just the headline!

Hey, you called me a hero of high standing! Wheee!

Thats so retarded. How stupid do you have to be to take a MOTORCYCLE out onto the ice. I don't care if it's been below freezing for months and you think that ice is thick enough. But its been UNUSUALLY WARM. IDIOTS.

I've only read one of his books, Okham's Razor, but I really enjoyed it; it was quite thought-provoking.

I have high expectations for these three.

From what I know of that area, the "three morons" were probably completely and utterly lost - and may not have even known they were ON the ice until it was too late.

The cops are quoted as saying that alcohol was NOT a factor, which lends weight to this hypothesis.

The survivor was very prepared - had a candle to keep him warm (which is probably why he survived), and had the presence of mind not only to use it, but to use his cellphone...

...and misdirected his searchers to the wrong area of the lake, near the campgrounds and several kilometres from his actual location. Further evidence that they may have gotten turned in the middle of the night.

So they were dummies for being out in the middle of the night, but one at least was not completely clueless, unlike a certain CAT I know, who is currently battling valiantly (and losing...) with a plastic disposable spoon.
