For the past couple of mornings, as soon as I log on, a virus scan starts up. At first, I didn't know what was going on (it's in the background), I just knew that the hard drive was working its tail off and everything was sovery slow. In fact, I worried that I'd picked up a virus, not a virus scan.

It takes an hour to run. An hour! How do you Micro$oft users stand it? Even now that it's done, everything's all jagged and hiccup-y. boo!

Oh yeah, and, IE? *shakes head* There are no words.

A neighbourhood kitten was hit & killed last night on St. Clair. I'm really glad I wasn't down there for that. One day, waiting for the bus when I was in high school, I saw a cat hit by a car on Midland in morning rush hour traffic. The worst was seeing the poor thing flailing about for a few minutes, trying to get up. Poor kitties. Poor puppycat, who had to endure being molested by me for a little while last night.

Wednesday next cannot come quickly enough.

Umm ... it shouldn't take that long (even though I'm assuming that you exaggerated SLIGHTLY). That's not good.

And now you know why I'm no longer a Micro$oft user. Linux is so much more easily secured than Windows that there are no anti-virus programs for it: at least, no anti-Linux-virus antivirus programs.

IE: One word: FIREFOX.
Outlook Express: THUNDERBIRD.

OK, to try to cure this virus you've managed to pick up: Are you using AVG? It's free, and it might catch the viruses commercial ones miss.

If you're still having problems, I'm free this afternoon/evening and all day Saturday. Call me up and ask me to come over. If you need my phone number, e-mail me, if necessary through the Fanboys mailing list.

Oh, heh. Thanks for the advice. It's my work computer. (Guess it would've helped if I'd mentioned that?) I think I'll have to contact IT, but the virus scan doesn't give me any messages, so I assume that it's run okay? (It's the scanner with a red V on a blue shield icon - don't remember which that is.)

Don't worry - if I weren't on a Mac, I'd use Linux. And you & Chris would be my help desk. (Which could happen, btw, when my laptop needs replacing.)

*Whew*

I was unaware you used a Mac at home. They are Linux with a pricetag: they're both based on Unix.

Yes, it's your corporate IT department's problem. Get them involved. They like to think they're needed. ^_^

Poor puppycat.
One day I was leaving work and I see a stray kitten have a car run right over it. After it was flopping around like a worm, so I go and get it. No visible marks and it is doing its best to get away, but I take it home to make sure it is safe. (Thinking it might have a broken leg because of the flopping). Called it Wyrm.
So I get it home, and put it into a container so it won't escape, it hops over the side and immedealitly finds a small hole in the kitchen area we didn't know about and spends all night meowing pitfully. Took hours to catch it, had to tear away floorboard.
We were moving so couldn't keep him, but I believe the car narrowly missed him, and he got freaked out and was unable to figure out which way to run.
I hope he got adopted, he should of been. He was adorable and very young.

I have the same reaction when it comes to child abuse, now that I'm a father. Oh, I hated the practice before, but now I need to play with my son before I feel better. It's the worst, I tells ya, especially when I was working for NCO. I'd hear people yelling at their kids, telling them to shut up, or even smacking the poor kids. I'm positive one day I heard someone beating their daughter senseless. I asked a supervisor, and my available actions were: 1) do nothing and 2)act like nothing happened.

It's not just on the phone, either. A couple came to see a movie with their kids a couple of days ago. One was an adorable little girl who was only 3, and the other kid was so young he was still in a car seat. They had no sense of humour, and I heard the father snap violently at his 3-year-old to get her hand out of his pocket. When the movie ended, the baby in the car seat was still asleep, but the little girl was crying her eyes out.

...

Great, now I need the boy. And he's in Stratford. >_

I get so irritated when people bring their children to places that are exciting for them (movie theatre, theme park &c.) and then yell at the kids for being excited. Grrrrrrr!

'Course, I also get irritated when people drag their children to places that are so boring for them (One of a Kind Show &c.) and get angry when the kid is bored.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I often see mothers with their babes in tow on the subway - babes they proceed to ignore until the kid starts fussing. All the mom had to do (and I see this over and over and OVER again) is play with them for a bit and they'll happily go to sleep or calm down. Kid is BORED, mom, and probably a little nervous.

And the mothers in question are typically far, FAR to young to be bringing up baby on their own - they're babies themselves.
