Crescent is not just a shape. It also means increasing or growing. The French is croissant, from the verb croître, to grow.

So, the last little sliver of a moon. Yes, veryvery beautiful, it's slender and graceful and pointy to cut through your heart. But it's not a crescent moon.

But the first little sliver of a moon, that's a crescent moon in Ginnyterms, right?

So a waning crescent moon (http://www.astro.wisc.edu/~dolan/java/MoonPhase.html) is literally a shrinking-growing moon.

The first little sliver of a moon, yes, that's a crescent moon. And the really fat almost-full moon, technically is also a crescent moon.

Granted, dictionary.com does define a crescent as something crescent shaped, but Ginny does not.

It is also an asana, and I do encourage my class members to grow towards the ceiling.

See, THIS sort of imagery is why I'm really looking forward to seeing what you write. I wish I could be as poetic as this in regular conversation.

eeeep. I'll see what I can do. Often, when I'm trying to write nicely, I feel like I'm forcing it. But that's what beta-readers are for! :-D

Have you read Patricia McKillip? It sounds like you might like The Book of Atrix Wolfe...
