Monday morning stuff
Aug. 23rd, 2004 07:43 amWalking to work this morning, someone started talking to me. Within a minute, it became obvious that he was trying to get money out of me. But he was being polite, so it didn't irritate me. But he was being too polite, and not walking fast enough. So I had to be rude & just keep walking, or slow down and risk being late for work. There I was, on Yonge Street, at 6:30am, dressed for a day at the office (a little nicely dressed for our business casual office), and he was holding me up. Get to the point so that I can apologise & say no, and then get to work on time! Yikes. That sounded rude.
The thing is, he claimed to be trying to get a buss ticket to Barrie. What's with that? It's like the latest scam to get money out of people. I can't comprehend leaving my home with no way of getting back there, without some sort of safety fund. And then there's the network of people that I could turn to in emergency, should that safety net disappear. Not to mention my family. Okay, yes, I'm fortunate, and I realise that, but really... Right? (And then I feel even worse for saying no, because to be so alone in the world makes me sovery sad.)

Date: 2004-08-23 05:11 am (UTC)It's normal to say no. Imagine if we were to give money to everyone who needs it, we'd never be able to make it ourselves. Sad, yes; selfish, I don't know; but realistic, definitely.

Date: 2004-08-23 06:41 pm (UTC)...You'd think the bastard would learn the first time, since I ran into him 2 weeks ago. And if I *do* run into him again, I'll remind him that he was stupid to DO IT AGAIN.
