In keeping with today's "theme"...
Aug. 22nd, 2004 04:41 pmThe first time I made caramel:
It was a complete success. I was making almond bark, and the sugar melted like a dream. I watched it buble & boil until it was just the right colour. The smell was heavenly. My tastebuds were dancing in anticipation. I spread the roasted almonds on the baking sheet, and then poured the caramel over top. Then my willpower reached its limit. I had to taste it, right away. There it was, clinging luxuriously to the wooden spoon, enticing me with the sweet burnt aroma. I would just have a little. Just a little molten sugar. Fortunately, I used my fingertip and not the tip of my tongue to taste it. sigh
Then, a year later, at George Brown, we were making croquembouche, and the instructor had warned us to have a bowl of icewater handy. Good advice, I thought, but I won't need it. I know the dangers of caramel. Except my lab partner didn't and dripped caramel on my hand. Ouch!
Tonight, for dinner: ice cream. Thanks for the suggestion, Jez! And now, back to the balcony and Tales of the Otori, book III. I'd thought it would be an exception to my rule against trilogies. How wrong I was.
