Like so many others, I've been receiving comment notifications from 6 weeks ago. And it's just reminding me of all the lovely conversations that died out because the notifications didn't get through. Booo.

This morning I was listening to Marlene Dietrich's version of La Vie en Rose. Wow! That woman had one sexy voice, I gotta say. And then I got thinking about Marilyn Monroe (not a huge jump, I don't think) and I don't really see her as sexy. Is it the helplessness that was part of her persona? The pseudo-innocence? Granted, I was never a huge fan, and I'm just theorising without properly thinking it through, but Marilyn Monroe always seemed rather waif-like, needing to be rescued. I guess that was her appeal.

So, I'm curious. Tell me who you think is really sexy. Or what you find very attractive.

People I find sexy

Lauren Bacall, Jenny Agutter, Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche, Jane March. Is there a common thread? I think maybe it's a surface coldness or innocence masking the exact opposite.

Ooooh, good choices! I don't know Jenny Agutter or Jane March, and I'm only vaguely familiar with Catherine Deneuve, but what you call a surface coldness, I'd be more inclined to call self-sufficiency. Po-tay-to, po-tah-to, I guess.

Ingrid Bergman for sheer beauty, Lauren Bacall for sheer style and grace. Cary Grant because, well. Ahem.

Marilyn Monroe just never appealed to me because she was obviously there to /be/ sexy rather than a remarkable woman whose style or poise or some other compelling trait made her sexy as a side effect of who she was.

The list of male celebrities whom I find attractive is long indeed (and, strangely, my husband can tell you who better than I can), but the common factor is intelligence, a very good voice, and cunning ingenuity.

Hrm. I hadn't really thought why. :D Actually, probably their voices as much as their looks. Hagerty has what I call a bedroom voice, just like some people have bedroom eyes. Magnuson is a very brassy New York voice that can also turn very soft and sweet.

With Veronica Lake, I admit it's the hair. *_*

a-ha, thank you ^_^ I like voices too. Lots. Watching the English Patient yesterday, I kept admiring Ralph Fiennes' voice.

you know all this already... but sean connery (that voice!), liam neeson, patrick stewart... not sure if it's the accents, the older man thing, or what... have never gone for the classically pretty type... but sexy is in the nuances... the movements of an arm or a shoulder or an eyebrow... it's in the eyes... in the way someone carries themselves... the way they move & talk... mmmmmmmmmmm...

In terms of famous people, I think that Dawn French and Oliver Platt really do it for me the most. Next up, but somewhat distant as seconds would be Camryn Manheim and Alfred Molina.

So, what about them do you find attractive? And in general what do you find sexy?

men: Sting, David Bowie, Clive Owen, Orlando Bloom as Legolas (but not so much without the long hair), Rodney Yee (but only to watch)

women: Isabelle Huppert, Fanny Ardant, Catherine Hepburn, Juliette Binoche, Marlene Dietrich, Audrey Tatou, Judy Garland

Oooooh, Bowie! And Legolas. Although I think Legolas is yummy, I don't know if I find him sexy, exactly...

I never thought of Judy Garland as sexy. But now that you mention...

I find a LOT of things attractive and/or sexy, but they'd be hard to enumerate. I think that attraction is largely a composite of all the characteristics you associate with people with whom you've had close connections in the past. For people who make such connections easily, the lists get long and very diverse, and some are contingent upon context or the presence of other things, etc.

With Dawn French and Oliver Platt, they both tend to play smart but somewhat shy or self-effacing, yet brilliantly witty people. Dawn French's lips are incredibly expressive, and she talks with her hands a fair bit, which I like. Oliver Platt's whole carriage reflects a sort of mischievousness, which I adore. Physically, it'd be even harder to nail down specifics. I like my folk big in general (not always, but most of the time), and they're both wonderfully cuddly. They both have lovely eyes. I like the way facial hair looks on Oliver Platt. They both have great hair. Dawn French has a nice butt. Umm. *shrug* Oh, Dawn French has a charming accent, and Oliver Platt has wonderful diction. They both enunciate very well.

I don't usually try to take apart that sort of attraction / sexiness response. I just go with it. I assume that in various ways they remind me of people I've had crushes on or relationships with before.

hmmm off the top of my head:
milla jovovovovich: mouth and eyes and nose, i guess, and she kicks ass in resident evil and the fifth element
kate beckinsale (in underworld, not so much in van helsing): brooding look, awesome outfit, and she kicks ass
eliza dushku (as faith in buffy): bad girl attitude, and she kicks ass

i think there's a theme here...

Female: Alyson Hannigan (who I've only ever seen as Willow, really). She's adorable and quirky and expressive. Put her in Vamp Willow clothes and it's really quite amazing.

Male: Seth Green (who I *have* seen in roles outside of Buffy). Same reasons, except that I don't think that outfit would work for him. ;)

I don't seem to know many of the Hollywood set. ^^

Generally, I have a soft spot for the leather and jewelry look when it's done well (live people, take a note from the animated people who wear it--they don't slouch or scowl much).

And as I'm an absolute sucker for a good voice . . . Megumi Ogata (when she's not playing Shinji, who isn't sexy under any conceivable circumstances) is fabulous. Akio Suyama doing serious work (like Haru, who isn't listed in his IMDB credits) gives me good chills. Tomokazu Seki can be really sexy when he's not being too rough-and-tumble. Kazuhiko Inoue has a great voice. Um . . . Takehito Koyasu, ditto.
