Just read Chuck Palahniuk's Lullaby. It was an entertaining read, an interesting premise. The characters were maybe a little caricature cliche, but not too badly.

I was wondering where the idea came from. What was the seed of this story? Did it start with Palahniuk wishing he could kill Dr. Laura with a thought, rather than having to continue listening to her haranguing her callers? Since my stories often evolve so much from idea to finished project (on the rare occasion that I actually finish one), it interests me.

Now, on to the complaint. One of the characters "unknowingly" has sex with a dead woman. Granted, she's newly-dead. Still warm even. But WTF??! What an insensitive fuck! C'mon, I mean, there's no reaction, sure, she may be still warm, but nothing. Really, she's not moving. Not at all. Not in the least! Between that and the bukkake of cetacean proportions, I'm doing a fair amount of damage to my brain with my recent reading.

I usually get entertainment etc. out of Palahnuik's books (although I've never learned to either spell or pronounce his name), but they tend to freak me out, so I'm not sure that I *enjoy* them . . .

I need a freaked-out icon.

Although I'm something of a rabid Palahniuk fan, I had many problems with Lullaby and one of them was this unwitting-sex-with-dead-woman issue. And that apparently it was really good sex, too. I can't really imagine that.
I saw him when he toured after Lullaby was released and he said very interesting things about how his books were written. Pretty much straight through from beginning to end without knowing how it's going to finish. He didn't know the twist in Fight Club when he started!
Unfortunately, if he mentioned what the inspiration for Lullaby was [and he probably did], I have now forgotten.

It's odd because even the Palahniuk books that I really like do damage to my psyche, but Fight Club is my yayhappycheerup movie.

And "hello" :) I saw you posting about the Hairy Tarantula on the Toronto community and um. Hello.
