I love old movies, especially old musicals. But sometimes they hurt me. Hollywood had the most ridiculous idea of love. I just finished watching The Apartment. Starring Jack Lemmon & Shirley MacLean. It's nice to see them young again. But the "romance" in it - argh!

Another one I have but can't bear to watch is the Errol Flynn & Olivia DeHavilland inThe Adventures of Robin Hood. The whole Maid Marion spin won over to Robin Hood's side against her will just ticks me off! I won't get started on Captain Blood!

Then there's Gigi - the lovely story of a girl. Being trained by her grandmother & great aunt to become a courtesan. With Maurice Chevalier as an unrepentant lech. sigh (I still love it though. The night they invented champagne/ it's plain for all to see/ they thought of you & me/ I want to fly to the sky on champagne... too lazy to look up the rest of the lyrics)

All my old classics are being shot down. Sigh. There's only one thing to do. The Princess Bride

I *loved* Gigi as a girl. I watched it over and over and over again. My mom turned me onto it, and sat through it patiently a number of times.

I found it again last year and sat my trusting husband down to watch it - and then found myself explaining that yes, yes, she's being trained to be a courtesan, but really, it's a sweet little musical, never mind the pedophelia - thank heaven for little girls...

Sigh. It took work to get him to see Chicago with me.

Ah, musicals. 1776, Oklahoma, South Pacific, anything by Sondheim... next time I'm up there we can do a duet of Unworthy Of Your Love together.

I am woefully unexposed to Sondheim. Must fix that. Oklahoma (the movie) traumatised me... was that Howard Keel? Don't like Howard Keel.

More musical theatre obsession...

Oklahoma's not as great as many make it out to me, but Pore Jud Is Daid is simply hilarious, Oh What a Beautiful Morning is a baritone's dream, and Oklahoma! is a big fun title song chorus number. "We know we belong to the land! And the land we belong to is grand!"

My favorite musical for sheer number of songs I love to sing that don't sound weird out of context (as, say, 1776 does) is Guys and Dolls. My Time of Day is not only gorgeous but a bitch to sing, and I do a lovely job on it, if I do say so myself.

I also bought the double-CD 50th Anniversary edition of Singin' in the Rain today. There's another utter classic. "Moses supposes his toeses are roses…"

I love "Moses Supposes..." - a great tune, and a wonderful number in the show. Yay for Comden & Green! (Although Jez & I have gotten into arguments on this one, she insists on the old "nobodies toeses are posies of roses" line.)

Guys & Dolls has a soft spot in my heart. If Marlon Brando still had a career after singing in that, then my own singing can't be all that injurious... ;-D

*twitch* No! No Brando! Robert Alda! You are listening to the WRONG VERSION!

The movie is OK, but Sinatra and Brando PALE next to Levene and Alda.

Heehee! You're so cute when you're irate! I should pick that one up (notes the amazon.ca link with approval) - I liked the music, if not the performers.

I have "Moses supposes..." stuck in my head. Sigh.

Oh, you should hear me yell at people when they say they only know the American version of Chess...

The Broadway CD also has Marry the Man Today, which was CUT from the movie because the producers were INSANE, as it's easily the funniest song in the show. And since the show also has Adelaide's Lament and Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat, that's saying a lot...

Fit as a Fiddle is in my head atm...

Let me know if I get dull, I tend to obsess about musicals.

Obsessing about musicals is good - I do that, too. Not getting e-mail alerts is bad. Booo!
