[Manga] 12 Days, by June Kim
Sep. 14th, 2007 07:46 amOh my goodness. I picked this up on a lark for it's weird/strange/creepy/disturbing premise and $6 price tag. I'm so glad I did.
Jackie's ex-lover is dead. The break up was recent and heart-breaking. She convinces Nick, her lover's brother, to bring the ashes to her intending to drink them. Creepy/disturbing, innit?
Instead, the story is stunning and complex and quiet and heartbreaking and deep and profound and gentle and mature and very, very moving. The art is wonderful (and I rarely notice art). It complements the story perfectly. The pacing is quiet and slow (good slow, not bad slow). One of the most surprising things is the unexpected humour. I was reading and my heart was breaking, but I was giggling and grinning, too.
This is absolutely stunning; I highly recommend it.
Aside to booksellers: if your customers have to use an eraser and patience to get all the goo off left by your price tags, something is very very wrong. *scowl*
