Hello, Cliché? It's George Takei calling, book me onto Heroes.

The whole "storyline" with Hiro's father pissed me off so much that if not for Christopher Eccleston's delicious misanthropy (which is pretty cliché itself) that last episode would've been my last episode.

Oh yeah, George Takei = yay, and I saw the NCC-1701 gag (although truly dorktacular would've been the NCC of Sulu's own ship, remember, the one he got in "Star Trek saves Peace"?1. But still — father kidnaps errant son to bring him back to take over the company he has no interest in or ability at running?! How 18th century can you get?!

In other news, I find Ando more adorable than Hiro. Y'know what else ticks me off?! Nope, but I'm gonna tell you. I'm getting a little tired of these prompts about who this is (the cast isn't that big) or where this is (we're down to 3 locations now - it's not that hard to follow). But on top of that, everyone else is "given_name family_name" except for Hiro & Ando. What's with that?! I can't even think of Ando's family name. And y'know what else? Why does he call himself "Hiro Nakamura"? He should call himself "Nakamura Hiro". *grumble*

Also, several of Hiro's "nee-san"s sounded a lot like "nii-san" to me.

To Mainstream Media: It's a good try, but you fail.

On top of that, can we get a break from Nicki? Please? The whole "blonde bitch kicking ass and not caring about names" thing is Old. Tired. More than over.

Also, y'know, as the first person to believe in his ability, I think Peter should get a little more slack from Isaac. This isn't some random stranger that Isaac's painting blowing up & taking NYC with him, this is someone he knows, someone who's believed in him when he was a strung-out junkie that no one believed in. Isaac's loyalty is only to the stranger who kidnapped him, forced him to give up the stuff cold turkey, and then turned around and forced him to get high again for his own selfish reasons?! I'd hoped for more from Isaac.

Oh yeah and... what exactly did Peter see Simone & Isaac do that was so horrible? Oh, it's two people who have a history of caring for each other worrying about a horrible future that they're trying to prevent. Ye gods! How can such heinous people stand themselves?! Are they even worth saving?!

Hrm… reading this, Eccleston's misanthropy just might not be enough…

1You know the Trek!verse is maniacal enough about details that it got a number. in fact, I'll bet I could find it on the first page of a Google search. *googles* Okay, on the first page was the Wikipedia article, and that had a link to the Excelsior's page - the alt text on the link is "USS Excelsior (NCC 2000)". Does that count?

Utterly. As long as by "sad" you really mean "awesome". ^_^

Also from the Awesome Files: you had that icon in your regular rotation, didn't you, instead of uploading it just for this?

(My bandwidth's being hogged by torrents right now, so I only just saw it.)

I still like Hiro more than Ando. He's just so happy to be there and it's infectious. Ando was a bit more appealing in this episode, I must admit.

I'm tired of the whole Nicki thing too. I wish she'd just die already. Really.

Well, I don't pretend to know contemporary Japanese culture all that well. But I took it for what it was; a sweeps-week thing, something they're planning on expanding on next season, and I still thought Takei kicked major ass in the role.

And I've mentioned several times publicly that the Nikki story just needs to die stabbity die.

Right with you on the rest of it, though. But really, it's TV. For the medium, I don't think they're doing so badly. It's not like a play. ;)

Answers, in order:

  • But, uh, that's kind of how the "baby-boom" generation of Japanese (I can't think of a better way to put it concisely) are. 22nd-century technology, 18th-century honor. As far as I'm concerned, the elder Nakamura's actions are totally in character.

  • Honestly, I find the "who and where" titles helpful. There are at least eleven major characters, and a lot of the sets, frankly, look like they could be next door. Especially given that two of the characters are on a cross-country road trip - their second, in fact - and that the directors really like long opening shots, I appreciate not having to guess at whose voice-over I'm hearing and where they are.

  • I'm not sure we've been given Ando's family name, except perhaps once when he answers the phone. But I do recall that when two characters are listed together, neither is given a family name, as a general rule; it may simply be that we don't really see Ando and Hiro separately.

  • Hiro introduces himself as "Hiro Nakamura" because he's introducing himself to Americans. He's clearly an America-otaku; he'd know perfectly well that a) Americans put the given name first, and b) Americans call each other by their given names.

  • Dialect issue. There isn't that much difference between "e" and "i" to begin with.

  • Eh. Niki doesn't really bother me, but to each his/her own.

  • Keep in mind that I've only seen any given episode once: I got the distinct impression that there was some brainwashing going on with Isaac. His relationship with Bennett is a lot less simple than "Bennett kidnapped him, forced him to quit heroin cold-turkey, and tossed him back out on the street". (Also, they didn't force him to quit cold-turkey. Both Methadone and morphine were mentioned, which implies that Isaac went through a pretty standard, if perhaps intensive, detox process.)

  • Simone told Peter, when they first got together, that she and Isaac were completely through - her last act with him was to exhibit his paintings like she'd agreed to. Besides that, he's in love with her. Seeing Simone and Isaac together like that, being affectionate and loving, could easily have been a dealbreaker for someone who's not exactly that hinged to begin with.
