I've figured out part of why I don't like all those "how to make your 'staycation' better" tips. It's cause that was my childhood. We had road trips some summers and a Caribbean vacation at the beginning of grade 10, but there were plenty of years when we stayed in town and maybe went to Wonderland. This sense of a summer not being a real summer if there's no vacation? It can kiss my ass. (The irony of this is that I'm in the best financial position I've ever been in in my life. Oh, world.)
