That's a real shame. If Valentine's Day cards featured mutated four-faced animal-beings with fiery death swords, I'd be a much cheerier guy. That's a great quote. (Link courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] edg)

The puppycat had a rough night. I suppose it was because of the workmen in her home yesterday. Even if they didn't "test" the new fire alarm they installed (which I'm told is the audio equivalent of having a drill through your brain), just the drilling & strangers would've been enough to freak her out. But she really really wanted to get into the armoire to sleep on the sweaters. The long-haired black cat wanted to sleep on my sweaters. So yeah, I wouldn't let her. We had several arguments, ending with her shut out of my bedroom, and me with a pillow over my head to drown out the sound of her scratching at the door. Yep, I'm a big meanie.

What is a puppycat?

A puppycat is a rare and mythical beast. So rare, in fact, that some doubt its existence. Physically, it resembles a cat - four legs, pointy ears, fluffy tail. However, it exhibits many puppyish traits: always underfoot, prone to little bites, vocal in displeasure, with no sense of personal space but its own. It is both a blessing and a curse to the human with which it has chosen to bond.

Ah, it's a daemon from His Dark Materials. I'm going to start calling you Lyra.

Hm... I only read The Golden Compass. And don't remember it all that well. But I do see the puppycat as a daemon. :-D

I'm about 2/3 through the Golden Compass atm, and am greatly enjoying it. I hadn't read it at first because I wasn't really into epic fantasy for many years, and had also heard that the later books were very anti-religion. (I'm not particularly religius anymore, but having been brought up Catholic, there's still a certain part of me that goes "grr" when the Church is shown to be evil and foul and murderers.

But everyone and their brother said I should read it, and they were right. The main thing I like is the pace - this book simply does not let you pause for a breath. You might want to look into it again when you get a chance.

Also on my current reading list: Michael Moorcock's The Dreamthief's Daughter, Spider Robinson's Callahan's Con, and David MacIntee's Doctor Who: The Eleventh Tiger.

I saw the Dreamthief's Daughter on the remainder tables at Coles. But since the only Elric I've read was a graphic novelisation, I thought I might be lost if I tried to pick it up. Let me know what you think of it?

I also rather enjoyed The Golden Compass, but for some reason didn't pick up the other two, and enough time passed that I decided I could live without knowing. I really dislike trilogies and series. Also, there's something that happens right at the end, I won't give it away, but it really put me off the book. :-( It was too unhappy.

Gosh, and with a last chapter called 'Betrayal' I was expecting butterflies and rainbows. :D I'm pretty much expecting SOMEONE close to her to die, so won't be too upset, likely. This is typical of fantasy trilogies. Look at Harry Potter and the Order of "OMG LOOK WHO DIES!!!".

Do I have to? ;-)

Mean sarcastic Sean. thpbpbpbpbt! The fact that there is a "typical of fantasy trilogies" is a big part of my dissatisfaction with them. But that's a big long ranting tirade. I'm becoming jaded.
